THE APPOINTMENT OF SHARIF AS THE LEADER OF THE ALLIANCE ANGERS IRAN

The meeting of defense ministers of the countries of the Islamic Coalition to confront terrorism did not go unnoticed by Iranian officials.

The Iranian daily "The Nation" reported that Iran is infuriated by the Saudi-Pakistani rapprochement, and senior Iranian foreign ministry officials said they had continued with Pakistan to urge it to reconsider its decision to be the head of its war in the Saudi-led Islamic alliance.

"They insist that it is a Sunni alliance against the Shiites, and we are struggling to convince them that it is an alliance against terrorism," a Pakistani official told the Nation. "They are moving the closer we get to Saudi Arabia."

The Pakistani official added to the newspaper that diplomatic contacts between Iran and Pakistan were underway on the issue and Pakistan hoped that Iran would calm down in the coming days.
"We have assured them that we will withdraw from the coalition if it proves to be sectarian, and so far we plan to wipe out terrorism and not any Islamic sect," the official said.

Pakistan recently approved the leadership of General Rahil Sharif, the former commander of the Pakistani army, on the leadership of the Islamic Alliance against Terrorism. Riyadh waited for Islamabad to respond for several months before General Rahil gave the green light to lead the alliance, which angered Iran.

Since the establishment of the Islamic Alliance, Iranian officials have said they feel this alliance is directed against them, and justify this by not inviting them, Iraq or Syria.
